The death toll from floods in Western Europe has risen to more than 180 as search and rescue operations in the flooded areas continue.
According to local police, the hardest hit area Ahrweiler, part of the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate counts more than 110 victims. The death toll in neighboring Rhine-Westphalia is 45, including four firefighters.
Belgium has also confirmed 27 victims. Chancellor Angela Merkel visited Schuld on Sunday, a village near Ahrweiler the region most affected by the floods.
Heavy rains fueled other flooding over the weekend in southeastern Germany and Austria, but not to the devastating level caused by last week’s rains.
