22 deputies of the opposition party Syriza have called in the interpellation in the last hours the Minister of Civil Defense and the Minister of Health regarding the facilitation of the work at the border point of Kakavija.
In the written question addressed to the two members of the Mitsotakis government, they point out that out of the four border crossings with Albania, only Kakavija operates with a limited time and a limited number of people crossing.
Opposition MPs refer to the complaints of the officials of this customs for the large load created by the non-functioning of other customs, which leads to long queues, delays and concentrations of large groups of people in a small territory, which is contrary to the rules of the pandemic period.
According to the question of the Syriza party lawmakers, the request of the customs officers of 600,000 Albanians and 250,000 homogenous people who live and work in Greece and are its citizens, but meanwhile maintain family ties with Albania, is to alleviate the situation at Kakavija point as soon as possible.
The closure of border crossings and the restriction of people from Albania has also led to a shortage of seasonal Albanian workers, causing major damage to annual fruit production, especially in northern Greece.
It is a vital need to open the border crossings with Albania, emphasize the opposition deputies after hundreds of thousands of immigrants and homogenous who have been isolated for months from quarantine, go to see their relatives or families, so the two ministers in question are asked:
Are there any plans for the safe opening of another border station besides Kakavija?
How do you think it will facilitate the work and concentration of people at this border point in terms of health security for both customs and police personnel as well as for passing citizens?
How many police officers are currently on duty at all border crossings with Albania?
It is emphasized that it was the pressure and the request of the customs union that led to the opening of the Kapshtica station a few days ago, as well as the extension by several hours of the operation of the Kakavija customs, measures which do not solve the problem.
