Pope Francis was admitted to a hospital in Rome this Sunday, where he is expected to undergo colon surgery. The news has been confirmed by the Vatican.
Spokesman Matteo Bruni said the pope was suffering from “symptomatic divergent synthesis” of the colon, a condition that causes constant pain and bloating.
Among other things, Bruni said that the operation will be performed in the evening at the Gremelli Hospital in Rome.
Italian media write that this is the first time that Pope Francis, 84, is hospitalized, since his election as head of the Vatican in 2013.
