Scientists have proven that the coronavirus has been transmitted from humans to wild deer in some parts of the United States. They detected antibodies to SARS-CoV-2 in 40 percent of white deer in the northeast of the country, Science Alert reports.
In Michigan alone, 67 percent of wild deer had immune markers for the coronavirus in their blood. This is the first evidence of widespread exposure to COVID-19 in wildlife.
Although the health condition of none of the deer was bad, the presence of specific antibodies in the blood indicates that they have recently overcome the virus.
Scientists fear that the wild deer population could be a good basis for the development and mutation of COVID-19, which can then be passed back to humans, but with more serious consequences.
