Amazon chief executive Jeff Bezos will step down on July 5, handing over power to AWS chief Andy Jassy, foreign media reported.
“We chose that date because it’s sensitive to me, the day Amazon was incorporated in 1994, exactly 27 years ago,” Bezos said Wednesday at Amazon’s annual shareholder meeting, which took place virtually.
Amazon had announced in February that Bezos would leave the post later this year. Bezos will take over as chief executive of Amazon board and is expected to devote more time to initiatives such as Bezos Earth Fund, his spacecraft Blue Origin, The Washington Post, and the Amazon Day 1 Fund.
The company had kept the inheritance plans quiet, though observers speculated that Jassy or Jeff Wilke would be Bezos potential successor.
