Albania and Greece will be connected by a railway system for passenger and freight transport with a line that starts in Kristalopigi near Florina and continues to Pogradec.
Furthermore, the railway connection continues with the existing network in Albania and that in Greece, enabling the movements to be carried out in all areas that the two countries cover with railways.
The creation of this 130-kilometer-long railway line was announced by the European Union. The Official Journal of the EU has published the Statement of Open Procedure for the Service Contract for the implementation of the assessment and selection of investments within the project entitled “Initiative to improve cross-border transport through rail link between Krystalopigi and Pogradec” with the acronym ‘CB Hekur ‘.
Based on this project, the necessary studies are being done for the construction of the missing line between the two countries.
K
y project is part of the project “CB RAILWAY” which aims to develop a joint strategic investment plan for the connection of Greece and Albania, through a new railway line in the west from Krystallopigi to Pogradec and southeast to the Airport, with a total length of about 130 km, the document says.
The project is co-financed by the European Union and the National Resources of the countries participating in the “IPA Interreg Cross-Border Cooperation Program” Greece – Albania “2014 – 2020”.
The President and CEO of Greek Railways ERGOSE, Christos Vinis, in a statement to the Athens media today, said: “The project is about Greece’s connection with the Balkans and Railway Europe. “This is another crucial step towards achieving the national goal of turning Greece into a regional hub for the logistics and transport sector in the region and beyond.”
