The “Delta” variant of the coronavirus has so far been confirmed in 98 countries around the world, since it was first discovered in India.
According to experts, this variant of COVID spreads more easily due to mutations that make it better inserted into the cells of our bodies. In the UK, the variant is now responsible for 90% of all new infections. In the US, according to the data, this variant accounts for 20% of infections and health officials say it could become the predominant variant across the country.
But studies have shown that the vaccines being used (AstraZeneca, Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna) work against newer variants, including the Delta variant. According to a study done in England, it was found that people who had received two doses of vaccines were protected, but there were concerns about those individuals who had received only one dose of vaccines.
Experts therefore appeal to citizens to receive both doses of vaccines, in order to be protected against new variants.
