Haitian President Jovenel Moïse has been killed in an attack on his private residence. BBC writes that the news was announced by the caretaker Prime Minister Claude Joseph through a press release.
Joseph said the president’s residence in Port-au-Prince was attacked by unidentified gunmen at 1 a.m. local time. The attack also injured the First Lady, Martine Marie Etienne Joseph.
Joseph also said that “all measures have been taken to guarantee the continuity of the state “. The caretaker Prime Minister described the attack as “hateful, inhumane and barbaric”, adding that the Haitian National Police and other authorities were in control of the situation.
Jovenel Moïse, 53, has been in power since February 2017 after his predecessor, Michel Martelly, stepped down. His government faced many accusations of corruption and for this he in the country erupted a wave of violent anti-government protests.
