European Commission and ‘Europa Nostra’ announce the winners of 2021, the European Heritage Award. Among the 24 exemplary achievements, from 18 European countries, an award goes to the Gjirokastra Foundation, from Albania.
The jury stated that: “The efforts of the foundation promote a new generation of architects, craftsmen and other professionals, creating projects for the revitalization, protection and revitalization of the city of Gjirokastra”
One of the leading experts who lobbied for the Gjirokastra dossier, however, said that the award, in addition to being a promotion for Gjirokastra, is also a challenge that imposes more sustainable solutions in the future.
Speaking online during the event, European Commissioner Mariya Gabriel said: “The winners of the European Heritage Awards are ambassadors of the beauty of the European heritage, be it tradition or knowledge, impressive architecture, or how heritage can unite communities and generations.”
