WordPress.org announced that it will support the WebP image format. Version 5.8 of the content management platform will arrive in late July along with support for the new image format.
WebP is the new generation of image format that is expected to replace JPG, PNG and GIF formats. This new format has managed to produce higher image quality in smaller size.
Specifically WebP images are 26% smaller than the original images. The format started its journey in 2010 by Google as an open license and the internet reached a point where it relies on all modern browsers.
WordPress 5.8 can not convert images to WebP but there are plugins that can do this conversion. In the future a publisher may choose to upload an image to JPG or WebP. / PCWorld Albanian
