At least nine people have died after a cable car linking Italy’s Lake Maggiore to a nearby mountain snapped on Sunday.
The Stresa Mottarone cable car takes tourists and locals from the famous town of Stresa, on Lake Maggiore, nearly 1,400 meters above sea level to the top of Mount Mottarone in 20 minutes.
“Serious accident on the Stresa-Mottarone cable car. Alpine rescue, and other rescue teams on site. “Two ambulances by helicopter intervened,” the national alpine rescue service said on Twitter.
ANSA said the cable car was carrying 11 people and that two children aged 9 and 5 were being flown by helicopter to a hospital in the northern city of Turin in serious condition.
The incident happened at noon today, about 100 meters away from the last pillar of the arrival station. The cabin collapsed in a wooded and impenetrable area, where rescue operations are not easy, at one of the plant’s highest points.
