In an interview with “Voice of America” the chairman of the “Alliance for Albanians” party Ziadin Sela, who is currently in the United States, says he is convinced that the law proposed by the political force he leads, as well as the Alternativa party, will approved by the parliament of Northern Macedonia.
This bill, although accepted by Prime Minister Zaev’s Social Democratic League, is not being introduced for parliamentary debate, because the Macedonian opposition has warned of a deadlock, through lengthy parliamentary procedures that delay its vote.
Mr Sela sees this as a political game with the aim, he says, of not passing the law before the local elections scheduled for October. But the leader of the “Alliance for Albanians” warned that any attempt to block the law would force the Albanian opposition to activate the mechanisms of blocking the parliament.
Mr. Sela says that he does not know the exact figures for how many people are in question who do not have citizenship, but says that for him “it would be an extraordinary success even if this law would serve to solve the plight of even a citizen of only ”.
Mr. Sela also spoke about the census process in Northern Macedonia scheduled to start in April. The census takes place for the first time in about 20 years and due to the pandemic it was postponed to September.
For Mr. Sela, the pandemic was a pretext, supporting this reasoning in a political action of the Macedonian opposition before the postponement, which gathered signatures in order to cancel the census. The postponement says Mr. Sela has created disappointment for the diaspora, the process for whose electronic registration is ongoing.
Mr. Sela also spoke about the decisions of the justice system regarding the attack on the parliament on April 27, 2017, during which he himself received serious injuries. According to the head of the “Alliance for Albanians”, the court decisions have not achieved the goal of administering justice over the event. He says many political actors have not yet responded to what happened 4 years ago. / VOA /
