Unvaccinated people not only endanger their health but are also a source of danger to other people if they become infected with the virus, according to infectious disease experts. This is because the only source of new variants of the coronavirus is an infected person.
“Unvaccinated people are a potential source of infection with other variants,” said Dr. William Schaffner, a professor in the Infectious Diseases Division at Vanderbilt University. “The more unvaccinated people there are, the more likely it is that the virus will multiply,” Schaffner said.
All viruses mutate, and if the coronavirus is not prone to mutation, it changes and evolves again. Sometimes, a virus accidentally creates a mutation by giving it some advantages – higher transmissibility and making it more contagious, reports abcnews.al
Mutations that have more advantages will outperform other mutations by making up the majority of the virus particles that infect someone. If a version of Covid is successful enough, it will be turned into a variant.
Already, a new variant has spread to most of the world. Last summer, a mutation called D614G spread from Europe to the US and then to the rest of the world. Most of the new variants were different from the D614G. The Alpha variant, or B.1.1.7, became the dominant variant in the US by the end of spring thanks to its portability.
Now the Delta variant is even more transmissible and is expected to become the dominant variant in many countries, including the US. Current vaccines are effective against all variants but this can change at any time, reports abcnews.al
That is why doctors and public health officials are calling for more people to be vaccinated. Vaccines are not widely available in many countries. But in the US there is enough to vaccinate the population.
Only 18 states have fully vaccinated more than half of their population, according to data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“Currently, approximately 1,000 counties in the United States have vaccinated less than 30% of the population.
In some areas, we are already seeing an increase in cases, ”said CDC Director Dr. Rochelle Walensky at a press conference. If the virus tries to infect someone with immunity, there are two possibilities; or “escape” or cause mild symptoms or be asymptomatic.
Like a bank robber whose picture has spread everywhere, the virus will spread by infecting people with weaker immune systems. Unvaccinated people allow the virus not only to spread but also to mutate.
