Ending speculation, Iran today stressed that Vienna talks on reviving the 2015 nuclear deal will resume under the new government in Tehran.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh said Tehran had informed the P4 + 1 group (Russia, China, France, the United Kingdom plus Germany) that the next round of talks would take place after the transition of power in Iran.
The new Iranian government headed by former chief of the judiciary Ebrahim Raeisi, an ultra-conservative figure, will take over the reformist government from Hassan Rouhani in the first week of August.
Iran and the other co-signatories of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal have so far held six rounds of talks in the Austrian capital. While both sides have made “progress” in the marathon talks, disagreements over key issues have prevented any significant progress.
There has been speculation over the next round of talks, with the US and Europeans demanding that Iran return to Vienna, while Tehran urging Washington to return to its commitments under the nuclear deal.
Khatibzadeh blamed Washington for “failing to meet its obligations” under UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which regulates the 2015 nuclear deal, during six rounds of talks.
He said many differences remain between the two sides, giving the Americans the burden of “making a political decision”.
