Patients: When should the child start talking?

Doctor: Most children speak their first word between the ages of 10 and 14 months.

When the baby is about 12 months old, it could mean 1-3 words. They will be simple and incomplete words, but you will understand. They may say “ma-ma”, or “da-da”, or try a name for a brother or sister, pet or toy. If they do not say these words 12 months, you do not have to worry, as long as they are producing a lot of sound, they seem to be trying to speak and seem to understand you. They should use gestures, responding to their name and stopping the activity when they hear “no”.

If nothing quite matches the emotion of hearing the first word, or seeing the first step, language development during this year can be a lot of fun. There are many games to play as your child learns words.

Important linguistic events

The first word – If the child has not said his first word, he will say it soon. Most children speak their first word between the ages of 10 and 14 months. The truest words will follow the first word.

Gestures – The child can use many gestures in order to show the reaction that he is understanding you.

Body Parts – At about 15 months, your baby will be able to show some body parts when asked.

Naming objects – They can start naming objects from 12 – 18 months.

Vocabulary – around 18 months, most babies say about 10 words. After the 18th month word acquisition increases very rapidly

Name – Up to 24 months, the child should refer to himself by name.

Instructions – Your child should follow instructions between the ages of 12 – 15 months. By the age of 2 should be able to understand complicated sentences.

Sentence formation: By the age of 2 years should start to form sentences with 2-3 words. Eg his name and a request, or your name and a request (example: mama makina).

Children possess different language skills at different ages.

The words still will not be perfect. Children will begin to use consonants like d, n, t, which are produced between the tongue and the roof of the mouth.

This will be followed by g, k and ng, which are produced farther inside the mouth.

The child may confuse consonants like r and g, but you should not worry.
