The United States is experiencing an increase in cases and deaths with COVID-19, which is largely attributed to the highly contagious Delta variant of the coronavirus among unvaccinated people.
Four states with low vaccination rates were responsible for 40% of new cases last week, but cases have increased in all 50 states, officials say.
Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, said Friday that last week the U.S. had a daily average of 26,000 new cases. She said it was a “pandemic of the unvaccinated”. Also Friday, President Joe Biden echoed Dr.’s comments. Walensky, saying, “The only pandemic we have is among the unvaccinated.”
Meanwhile, a group of international government advisers say they are concerned about Britain’s plans to lift all restrictions on Monday. Advisers believe this would leave Britain exposed to new variants of the coronavirus, possibly turning it into a hotbed of spread.
Concern is growing for the Olympics after an unidentified person within the Olympic Village tested positive for the coronavirus. The person is said to be not an athlete, but someone from outside who helps organize the games.
Johns Hopkinstha University on Saturday that COVID-19 has caused more than 4 million deaths globally. More than 189 million cases have been confirmed.
