The US Embassy in Pristina on Friday criticized the Kosovo parliament’s decision to dismiss the board of Radio Television of Kosovo.
The embassy said the dismissal was made with “deficient reasons”.
On Thursday, the Kosovo Parliament dismissed the members of the board of directors of Radio Television of Kosovo on the proposal of the Parliamentary Committee on Public Administration, Local Government, Media and Regional Development, who justified the decision by saying “the tendency for large expenditures and growth uncontrolled number of employees in the public broadcaster, which is funded by the Kosovo parliament ”.
The US Embassy, without mentioning RTK, wrote on social networks that “Although the citizens of Kosovo deserve accountability, dismissals must be based on transparent evidence, just as appointments must be based on merit. Unilateral and hasty dismissals damage public institutions and do not address structural problems“, It is said in the reaction of the embassy in which it is underlined that”“Effective long-term reforms require a prudent and methodical approach, putting Kosovo’s interests first and party policies aside.”.
Opposition parties in the Kosovo parliament opposed the dismissal of the governing board.
The dismissed members of the board of directors described the decision as “political, illegal and flagrant interference in the work of the public broadcaster”, while warning legal actions to oppose what they called an “arbitrary decision”.
Meanwhile, the General Director of Radio Television of Kosovo, Ngadhnjim Kastrati called the dismissal “a dangerous precedent for RTK and the future of the public media”.
The Government of Kosovo, led by Prime Minister Albin Kurti, has fired the boards of directors of several public enterprises since taking office.
