“Nemo’s Garden” is the first underwater farm in the world, which has just started producing fruits and vegetables after a long break.
The unique structure with six underwater greenhouses was created on the shores of Noli in Italy by ‘Ocean Reef Group’ in 2012. The project started to bring results step by step and grew different plants like basil, different types of salads, tomatoes, squash, beans, green peas, aloe vera, mushrooms and strawberries.
Gianni Fontanesi, coordinator of the “Nemo’s Garden” project said that every year they are trying to create opportunities for new spaces that include fish farming, seaweed farming, or research laboratories or underwater stations to monitor wildlife .
In October 2019, the project suffered serious damage from the storm so work had stopped and even the complete closure of the underwater farm was in danger.
The team worked to revitalize the six underwater greenhouses until, due to pandemic limitations, they had to leave the habitat unprotected for months, and now the farm has returned to producing various plants.
