The US State Department has decided to declare five officials and former senior officials in Bulgaria “non grata”.
They are Alexander Manolev, Petar Haralampiev, Krasimir Tomov, Delyan Slavchev Peevski, as well as Ilko Dimitrov Zhelyazkov.
The basis of this decision, according to DASH, is reliable information about their involvement in corruption.
The official statement underlined that the US is determined to support the rule of law as well as strengthen democratic institutions.
“In their positions as Deputy Minister of Economy, Director of the State Agency for Bulgarians Abroad and Chief Secretary of the State Agency for Bulgarians Abroad, respectively, Manolev, Haralampiev and Tomov were involved in corrupt acts that undermined the rule of law and trust. of the Bulgarian public in the democratic institutions of their government and public processes, including the use of their political influence and official power for personal gain. “In his capacity as a member of parliament, Peevski used Zhelyazkov.” stated in the DASH notice.
Recently, the US State Department decided to also declare “non grata” the former Prime Minister of Albania Sali Berisha as a former official involved in corruption scandals and undermining democracy in the country.
