The US has seen an increase in the number of teens hospitalized between the ages of 12 and 17. According to a report, 204 adolescents were hospitalized between January 1 and March 31, 2021. Almost a third – 31.4% were hospitalized in intensive care units and 4.9% needed oxygen.
The rate of hospitalization among young people from 1 March 2020 to 24 April 2021 peaked on 9 January. The trend contrasts with hospitalization rates among people aged 65 and over – the age group with the highest number of vaccinated.
The increase in the number of adolescents between the ages of 12 and 17 may be related to the more contagious variants of the coronavirus and the return of children to school. Compared to influenza hospitalization rates, hospitalization rates due to Covid-19 from 1 October 2020 to 24 April 2021 were 2.5 to 3.0 times higher than the last three influenza seasons.
