The National Council of the Territory has approved in today’s meeting the issuance of the construction permit for the object: “National Theater”, located in the Municipality of Tirana, with developer the Municipality of Tirana.
The permit for the construction of the “National Theater” comes after numerous debates about the future of this institution, which collapsed in the summer of last year, despite numerous protests against its demolition.
A few days ago, the government changed the budget, planning about 900 million ALL (about 7 million euros) for the national theater, while the exact value of the entire project has not been announced.
Its construction was foreseen in the draft budget of the Municipality for 2021. In the report of the medium-term draft budget 2021-2023 it is stated that “Currently, the National Theater is in the design phase and the works are expected to start very soon, while its financing is guaranteed from the Budget of the State ”.
According to the report, “The project presented by one of the largest international architecture studios in the world, ‘Bjarke Ingels Grop’ based in Denmark, offers an architecture building with modern design and that creates a unique space in the city of Tirana, providing all the necessary and inspiring conditions for the development of acting talent, as well as for the public itself, which can engage the imagination ”.
The report does not give an exact value of how much the theater will cost, but in the investment tables of the draft budget of the Municipality are foreseen, in the item of cultural services funds for Design Studies, Technical Opposition, Supervision of Works Testing, with a total value of 232 million ALL , or less than 2 million euros, for the construction of the national theater, for the period 2021-2023.
Earlier it was stated that the cost of building the theater exceeds 30 million euros, a sum that if financed from the budget, as stated in the report, will have to be paid from taxpayers’ money.
