The Basic Court in Pristina has sentenced former Serbian police reservist Zoran Vukotic to ten years in prison for committing the crime of sexual violence during the war in Kosovo.
This is the first time someone has been convicted of such a crime by Kosovo courts.
The Minister of Justice, Albulena Haxhiu, described Vukoti .’s sentence as “good news for all victims of sexual violence in the war, for the citizens, but also for the history and future of Kosovo”.
“Justice for war crimes will be done and we will be committed to this every day,” said Haxhiu through a post on the social network Facebook.
Meanwhile, according to the Kosovo Center for the Rehabilitation of Torture Survivors (KRCT), Vukotic’s sentence marks “a turning point and hope”, not only for the victim who testified against Vukotic, but also for other survivors who one day “Justice will be done.”
