Two Earth observation satellites of the Turkish Ministry of Defense have photographed the fires in the Mediterranean province of Manavgat district of Antalya and the Aegean province of Marmaris district of Muğla and the damage they have caused from space.
According to local media, the photos were published on the official website of the ministry, which also sent the photos to the relevant institutions.
Göktürk 1 was launched by the Guiana Space Center on 5 December 2016 after numerous delays. Four years ago, Göktürk 2, another lower-resolution observation satellite compared to Göktürk 1, was successfully launched into orbit on December 18, 2012.
The death toll from fires on Turkey’s southern coast went up to eight on Sunday as firefighters battled for a fifth day to control the blazes that are still burning in coastal resort towns. Two other people died Sunday due to fires in the southern city of Manavgat, Health Minister Fahrettin Koca said, adding that 10 others were receiving treatment at the hospital.
