Eight people were killed and several others injured Wednesday morning when a gunman opened fire on a tram parking complex in San Jose, California, authorities said.
The suspect in the incident was an employee of the complex and was found dead during the incident, a police spokesman said, but did not specify how he died.
The incident took place in a tram parking lot administered by the Santa Clara Valley Transport Authority, near the city’s main airport.
An official said the shootings took place before 7am in a part of the facility where workers are doing vehicle maintenance and not in the operations and control center.
Authorities have received information about the presence of explosives in the building and are working to secure each of its rooms, according to media reports.
San Jose, a city of about 1 million people, is located in the heart of Silicon Valley, a global hub of technology innovation and home to some of the largest tech companies in the United States.
An ABC News television correspondent reported that the building was not open to the public, so the shooter would have needed help from inside to enter. Parking is a complex of industrial buildings, near the railway tracks.
