The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that Johnson & Johnson must pay a total of $ 2 billion in damages to women who claim to have contracted ovarian cancer for using the company's powder.
Judges today did not comment on the rejection of the appeal filed by Johnson & Johnson.
The company claimed it did not receive fair treatment in a trial involving 22 women with cancer, of different origins from 12 different states, reports thewallstreetjournal.
The Missouri court initially fined the company $ 4.7 billion, but the Court of Appeals dropped the two women's lawsuits and reduced the damages to $ 2 billion.
The powder produced by the American company contains asbestos, which can cause ovarian cancer, the court ruled, while the company objected to both points.
Johnson & Johnson, based in New Brunswick, New Jersey, has banned the sale of their famous baby powder in the United States and Canada, while it is still on the market elsewhere in the world, including Kosovo.
