US epidemiologist Anthony Fauci has warned that it is too early for the US to declare victory over COVID-19, despite the fact that the number of new cases has dropped to its lowest level since June last year.
“We do not want to announce the victory ahead of time, because we still have work to do. “But if more and more citizens are vaccinated, they will be safer,” Fauci said in an interview with the English daily The Guardian.
In the US, when 50 percent of the population is vaccinated, they will be able to picnic and go to the beaches without having to wear masks.
According to data from Johns Hopkins University, as of May 1 – the number of daily cases of COVID-19 has dropped by 53 percent, but the percentage of infected is still high.
“Unless there is a very low percentage globally, there is always the risk of a new variant exploding, which could reduce the effectiveness of our vaccines,” said Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
