Israel said the international community should have major concerns about the election of Iran’s new president, Ebrahim Rais.
Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Lior Haiat considers Rais the most extremist president in Iran.
Raisi has been declared the winner of the June 18 election, where many candidates were disqualified from the race. He will be inaugurated as president in August. Raisi, a cleric and head of the judiciary in Iran, is considered to have ultra-conservative views. He is on the US sanctions list and his name has been linked to past executions of political prisoners.
According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, Raisi is a person “who will soon advance Iran’s military nuclear program.”
Israel and Iran are two rival states exchanging accusations against each other and recently, hostilities towards these two states have escalated.
Iran and world powers reached a nuclear deal in 2015 aimed at curbing Tehran’s nuclear program in exchange for easing sanctions. But in 2018, the US withdrew from the deal and reinstated economic sanctions on Iran. After that, Iran has announced that it has resumed uranium enrichment, raising fears that the Islamic Republic could develop nuclear weapons.
Since April, the world powers, which are signatories to the agreement, are meeting in Vienna to revive the agreement. On June 20, the parties meet for this purpose, but before the meeting, it was said that Iran and world powers have major differences on key issues.
