Patients: How do I know if my mole is normal or if I have skin cancer?
Doctor: Skin cancers – such as melanoma, basilioma, squamous cell carcinoma – often start as changes in the skin. Melanoma can arise on an existing mole, but it can also settle on normal skin. When placed on a mole, melanoma is easier to diagnose, as the mole transforms into melanoma takes some time. It is totally recognizable to the naked eye.
Dermatologists follow the ABCDE rule to detect the warning signs of skin cancer:
Asymmetry
The mark is asymmetrical. Create an imaginary line on the marks and compare if it is symmetrical on both sides.
borderless
Borders or borders change – from round it becomes sharp, lined and irregular.
Color
There is no uniform color, but some color shades – reddish, brown, blue, white or red.
Diameter
The mark is larger than the eraser of a pencil.
Evolium
It is changing – it shrinks, grows, enlarges, changes color or begins to irritate and bleed.
