A catastrophe is happening in Western Europe! The rains have caused floods in several states, leaving a total of 168 victims and over 1300 missing persons.
At least 141 people have died and over 1300 have disappeared after torrential rains in Germany. Thirty people have lost their lives in Belgium as a result of extreme weather, while in Luxembourg and the Netherlands extensive material damage has been caused. Bad weather with heavy rainfall caused rivers in Western Europe to overflow, destroying the region.
The worst hit was West Germany where at least 45 people were killed, scattered in its most populous state of North Rhine-Westphalia and neighboring Rhineland-Palatinate.
The town of Schuld, south of Bonn, was worst affected leaving 18 people dead and the town near Ahraeiler with dozens missing. In that area the Ahr River burst its banks and looted houses even when people were sheltering on their roofs.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has pledged full support for those affected by the floods, the worst the country has seen in decades. Merkel expressed “her deepest condolences” to all across the region who had lost loved ones.
This is a tragedy comparable to that of 2002 when 21 people died in Germany and left more than 100 dead across Europe.
Meteorologists’ forecasts say heavy rains are expected again in most of Western Europe, which means that the situation will worsen.
