Emma Coronel Aispuro, the wife of Mexican narcotics king Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, is expected to plead guilty this week to aiding the Sinaloa drug cartel.
The New York Times, citing a source familiar with the matter, reported that the Coronel would appear in Federal District Court in Washington on Thursday.
Her defense attorneys will not seek her cooperation with US authorities, or provide information about her husband’s allies, business partners or relatives, the Times reports, however nothing is ruled out and it can be done cause for the overthrow of a real crime empire.
A U.S. Department of Justice spokesman declined to comment, nor did the Drug Enforcement Administration or Coronel’s attorneys.
Coronel, a former beauty queen, was arrested at Washington Dulles International Airport in February. Emma is held in solitary confinement in a small cell where, according to her lawyer, she reads novels to pass the time.
Prosecutors charged him with Guzman’s spectacular escape through a long tunnel from the high-security Altiplano prison in Mexico in July 2015. Documents claim Coronel worked with Guzman’s sons to organize the escape plot.
Following a high-profile trial by a federal court in Brooklyn, New York, Guzman, 63, was convicted in February 2019 of organizing the largest drug cartel worth billions of dollars. He was sentenced to life in prison at the federal Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado.
