The European Agency for Disease Control and Prevention reports that the Indian version of Delta will account for 90% of new coronavirus infections in Europe by the end of August.
According to Agency, 70% of new SARS-CoV-2 infections are predicted to come due to this variant by early August and 90% of infections by the end of August.
In addition, there is evidence that those who received only the first dose of the vaccine are less protected from Delta-type infection than from other variants.
“Unfortunately, preliminary evidence suggests that Delta may infect people who have received only one dose of the vaccine. “It is very likely that this variant will be widely available during the summer, especially among young people who are not included in the vaccination.”, says director Andrea Amon.
The good news is that taking two doses of each of the available vaccines currently offers high protection against this variant and its consequences. However, about 30% of individuals older than 80 years and about 40% of individuals older than 60 years have not yet received full two-dose vaccination in the European Union.
The WHO has previously stated that the Delta variant of the coronavirus, which is causing an increase in cases worldwide, may have some degree of resistance to vaccines. The head of the WHO, Tedros Adhanom Gebrejesus, stated that the variant has been identified in 92 countries and has slowed down the global trend of declining infections after weeks in a row.
