Many popular websites crashed on Thursday in a massive global shutdown. Visitors who were trying to access some websites get errors in DNS which means that their attempts to access did not reach the websites themselves.
Some of those affected are Airbnb, UPS, HSBC, British Airways and even the PlayStation Network online gaming network.
The origin of the problem is with the Akamai DNS provider and the Edge DNS service. On the social network Twitter the company said that the problem had already been addressed and the services would start functioning normally.
Akamai is experiencing a service disruption. We are actively investigating the issue and will provide an update in 30 minutes.

DNS is a domain name system that converts domains like PCWorld.al to IP addresses that point to a computer server somewhere on the Internet.
Problems with DNS means that our browsers cannot find the appropriate IP address for a domain. Steam, Call of Duty, EA are also affected. In June another mass shutdown by Fastly caused major problems by crashing several high-profile websites and many online newspapers with global reach. / PCWorld Albanian
