Doctors of the Trauma Hospital have come out today in protest for the arrest of their two colleagues Ervin Sulaj and Serdi Memimi who are accused of taking bribes from the relatives of one of the injured in the Velipoja massacre, for surgery.
Doctors say that their arrest is unfair, calling the security measure “prison arrest”, a violation of the integrity of white shirts, until the full completion of the investigation.
“Health care workers’ unions. The union distances itself from any kind of abuse but can not allow these white t-shirts that save people’s lives by treating them equally as white and black or even criminals. The union does not consider it right to detain a doctor who does not pose a risk.
The law provides that detention is made when the criminal offense is being committed and the measure of imprisonment is imposed when the individual is of high risk, attempts to manipulate evidence or intends to leave. For these reasons the detention of doctors is abusive in violation of the law and a violation of the integrity of health workers. We demand an end to these abuses. After today we will examine the following situation. We will gather and discuss with colleagues “, said one of the doctors.
While another doctor said that the problem in Albania is the system, recalling a statement by Prime Minister Edi Rama. He stressed the need for hospital autonomy.
“Doctor for 30 years. I do not want to take anything away from my colleague. The Prime Minister said a few years ago that the problem in Albania for corruption is the system and not the individual. He has said that even if we bring a German here he will be arrested. They were arrested, does that solve the problem ?! Are you still being given tips again today ?! Of course yes. The Prime Minister has promised hospital autonomy. We wait. Hospital autonomy is needed. People have given tips and continue to give. The problem is the system “
The Court of First Instance Shkodra has imposed two days ago the security measure “prison arrest” for two Trauma doctors Ervin Sluaj and Serdi Memimi and the nurse from Shkodra, Diellë Mecaj, who are accused of receiving money to operate on Elmidin Dylin, who was injured in the Velipoja massacre.
