If there has always been a belief that Sali Berisha controlled and used the party he founded and led as a shield for his personal destiny, after the recent decision of the state department it turns out quite the opposite.
While the former prime minister has decided to personally defend himself and undertake a legal battle against the US declaration of non grata, it seems as if the DP is scattered, without a compass and without determination on the position it should take.
If you look at the public statement of Lulzim Basha and those of a weak voice that has dared to speak, everyone has expressed for Berisha’s great contributions in strengthening the Albanian-American alliance, but at the same time avoiding the essence of the issue: accusations to him as a miner of democracy and a corrupt beneficiary of state money.
So basically, they pretend to protect the former boss from something he is not accused of, and leave him completely exposed to the essence of the heavy arrows that have fallen on him.
In fact, the largest opposition party is in a crucial moment. Knowing the great role played by Berisha, who turned the PD into a perfect illustration of Mayakovsky’s verses about Lenin, the attack on the historical leader is also considered an attack on the PD’s 30-year legacy.
If the former president and the former prime minister have been a miner of democracy and a thief, such should have been the rule of the democrats over Albania. In these conditions, three roads are laid before the DP.
The most painful one is the acceptance as truth of Secretary Blinken’s accusations, which leads to a final divorce with Berisha and his legacy.
The second, more risky, is that of a rift with the US administration, claiming that the accusations are baseless, political and intended to facilitate the installation of the regime in Albania. If with the support of the first hypothesis, the DP would risk a cold or remove the most solid nucleus of its militants, with the second, it could absorb the accusations of anti-Americanism, which is usually issued by the propaganda of all powers. as curses on the opposition in the country.
Between these two logical choices, strong and risky, Lulzim Basha and the PD modeled by him, has chosen the most inappropriate version, the one to be, neither meat nor fish. So to be put in the role of idiot who pretends not to understand, being at the same time with Berisha and Secretary Blinken.
This kind of manly approach does not serve, in the first place, the former leader of the Democratic Party himself, who apparently understood this and preferred to take personal legal protection on his shoulders, not counting the political one of the blue headquarters. .
But, above all, this attitude without attitude, calls into question the truthfulness, the principle, and the fiber of courage of the largest opposition party to serve as a shield of Albanians against the threat from the regime that has just been finally installed.
And this sin, this lack, this infertility is far greater than Berisha’s personal fate, which many think should not have been better. Behaving amorphous, circumstantial, without a backbone and incapable of strong postures, the DP is becoming increasingly transparent. She is taking the form of a worthless organization, which not only is unable to protect her father, but also to play this role, for hundreds of thousands of Albanians, whether they are against or in favor of his legacy.
