The Karaburun Peninsula and Dukati have been on fire for more than two weeks. The flames are wreaking havoc on forests and firs, burning everything in front of them, causing great environmental damage. Although the flames are brought under control from time to time, the strong wind in the area causes some fires to be reactivated.
Even this morning, some of them have been reactivated in Karaburun, above the village of Dukat, while large and uncontrollable flames are in Grama Bay. Some protected area workers headed to Grama Bay to try to contain the blaze.
Today they are expected to intervene to extinguish the flames as well 3 helicopters who came last night from the Czech Republic and the Netherlands as part of the activation of the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism to deal with the fire situation. 2 helicopters have come from the Netherlands, 1 from the Czech Republic and all 3 will go on the ground today to “fight” the flames.
In Karaburun 1200 hectares have been burned, mainly pastures, while 35 are with tall trees.
