As fire fronts are spreading in some parts of southern Europe, another equally daunting concern is being discussed at scientific tables.
Suffocating air, high temperatures and plumes of smoke from fires and sums are turning into potential danger to human health. Experts warn at-risk groups, especially those with severe breathing problems, to stay inside and not move after having a vital need.
The heat wave will last another two days, where the maximum temperature is expected to record the value above 40 degrees while the winds will become even stronger turning into concern for the spread of new fires.
The “atmospheric cocktail” created by the high temperatures and the smoke left behind by the fires are creating a suffocating situation in several different areas in Greece.
“Toxic clouds. Harmful micro-particles and compounds that grow and are transported by fire because fire burns not only forests but also homes, factories and warehouses.
The recommendation is therefore for people who have problems with their respiratory system to stay indoors and place wet towels and sheets in open spaces in order to prevent particles left in the air from being deported.“, Said Professor Christos Zerefos.
