Canada on August 9 will open its border to Americans who are fully vaccinated against the new coronavirus (COVID-19).
As announced by the Canadian federal government, as well as international travelers who have received both doses of the vaccine can enter Canada starting September 7th.
The government has also lifted the measure of forced isolation for 14 days before coming to Canada, but will be required to test negative for the COVID-19 virus no older than 72 hours.
A child under the age of 12 who comes with a fully vaccinated parent or guardian will not need quarantine.
The Canadian border has been closed to everyone since March 2020, except for essential travel. As the rate of virus infection is declining and more people are being vaccinated, calls from these closed-down businesses have escalated.
The flight business has been closed since March last year and was scheduled to reopen on July 21, but with the latest announcement it will remain closed until August 9.
“This preliminary step allows the Canadian government to fully operationalize the regulated border measures before September 7, 2021, and recognizes the very close ties between Canadians and Americans,” the Canadian government said.
Health Minister Patty Hajdu said the opening reflects the Canadian public’s respect for the limitations of the COVID-19 virus and the decline in cases.
“The Canadians have worked hard and sacrificed for each other and because of this work we can take these next steps safely,” Hajdu said in a written statement.
Some travelers will be selected for mandatory virus tests when entering Canada and children under the age of 12 may travel to destinations with their accompanying adults, but they will need to stay out of group and day camp facilities.
So far there has been no statement from the US government if it follows the same path and will allow fully vaccinated Canadians to enter the US.
