The tragedy that took place today in Italy, where the number of victims went to 14 after the detachment of a cable car, has taken on other dimensions. Unfortunately, the Italian media report that the 9-year-old boy also died in the hospital of Turin.
The juvenile had suffered severe fractures in the body and was airlifted to Regina Margherita Hospital. It is learned that there were 15 people in the cabin of the cable car, of which 14 people died, while a 5-year-old is in serious condition.
The latter has suffered thoraco-abdominal trauma and fractures in the lower limbs. Another child just two years old is confirmed to be among the victims. “We did everything possible, but after trying to keep him alive, he did not succeed,” said the hospital director regarding the 9-year-old who recently passed away.
The cabin of the cable car suddenly detaches, crashing at noon today around 13:00. The causes still remain unknown, but it is suspected that the event occurred due to the detachment of the holding cable, about 300 meters away from the point of arrival.
The cable car was located at an altitude of 1491 meters. The cable car ride was taking place in one of the most populated areas for tourists where the whole journey takes 20 minutes.
The Stresa Mottarone cable car takes tourists and locals from the famous town of Stresa, on Lake Maggiore, at almost 1500 meters above sea level to the top of Mount Mottarone.
“Serious accident on the Stresa-Mottarone cable car. Alpine rescue, and other rescue teams on site. “Two ambulances by helicopter intervened,” the national alpine rescue service said on Twitter.
The cabin collapsed in a wooded and impenetrable area, where rescue operations are not easy, at one of the plant’s highest points. According to witnesses: “The cabin started moving very fast and then it fell.”
