The British Embassy in Albania on Thursday afternoon reacted to the decision of the Special Court Against Corruption and Organized Crime to sentence former Chief Prosecutor Adriatik Llalla to two years in prison.

Through a short note on the official Facebook page, the Embassy emphasizes that such a decision shows that where there is will, reforms work.

“We welcome today’s decision of the Special Court against Corruption and Organized Crime. It shows that, where there is will, reforms work. When a justice sector functions properly, no one is above the law“, She writes.

We also recall that Llalla was found guilty of the criminal offenses of “false declaration” and “concealment of property”.

In addition to imprisonment, the CCK has sentenced Llalla to 5 years in prison. Llalla was also seized from the property of the former senior justice official.

It is about 4 plots of land, in total 22 thousand square meters and 1 apartment in Durrës.

The former prosecutor is being tried for the criminal offense of concealing property. Meanwhile, a money laundering investigation was launched.

In December last year, the Special Court ruled on the seizure of five real estates of former Chief Prosecutor Adriatik Llalla, following a request by the Special Prosecution.

The investigation against Llalla started on March 15, 2018 at the Durrës Prosecutor’s Office, but was then transferred to the former Serious Crimes Jurisdiction.

He reportedly did not declare an amount of $ 7,400 spent in the US, an amount for the construction of an apartment, as well as expenses incurred in Germany.

Llalla was suspected of four criminal offenses, including “money laundering” and “abuse of office”, but at the end of the investigation SPAK assessed that only the accusation of “failure to declare property” was proven against him.

After completing his term as chief prosecutor, Llalla resigned from the system and did not undergo vetting. While the US State Department declared him non grata, barring him and his family from entering the US.
