Since the inclusion of Berisha and his family in the American black list, the DP and actors around it are behaving as if the tragedy that happened to them came from Washington. Therefore, many of them, shocked, expect more explanations and evidence from the US regarding their decision to declare Berisha corrupt and a threat to democracy.
But the US statements fall like a bomb and have an impact on our country not only because America is our superpower and strategic partner, but above all, because they are some truths that are known by all Albanians. So, the strength of the American statements does not stem simply from what happened in Washington, but from what happened in the middle of Tirana.
Tomorrow, the US may put former Presidents Meidani, Moisiu, Topi or Nishani on the black list of corruption, but such an attitude will not produce the same echo in our public sphere. Not simply because these figures do not have the political weight of Berisha, but because neither they nor their families have been caught red-handed in corruption scandals like the one in Gerdec, or in public assassinations like the one on January 21st.
In other words, no matter how powerful America is, it cannot produce phenomena out of nothing. The reason why the statements of the American ambassador and the State Department have so many echoes in our public space is because they say some truths that Albanians have known for years. Truths that the US itself once hid, as they declared Berisha a statesman after he had killed 4 protesters in the square.
Even Democrats know what America says. Who is that democrat who does not know that Berisha’s son was involved in Gerdec, but justice did not have the courage to investigate him? That on January 21, Berisha’s government killed innocent protesters on the boulevard? That in open violation of the law, Berisha did not hand over to the prosecution the guards responsible for killing the protesters? That Berisha openly attacked prosecutor Ina Rama by publicly calling her a “whore”, simply because she was doing her job?
It is ridiculous the attitude of the DP that awaits evidence from Washington while the tragedy and its traces are square in Tirana. Therefore, the division with Berisha should be done by the DP in Tirana and not in Washington, as the vast majority of Albanians have already done.
