US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called on Central American governments to do more to help curb illegal immigration. Secretary Blinken made the call during a meeting in Costa Rica on Tuesday with President Carlos Alvarado Quesada.
After meeting with the President of Costa Rica, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that the United States is preparing a $ 4 billion aid package to help address the challenges of “Irregular migration”.
“What we need to hear from our partners is a joint commitment with us to address the root causes [të migrimit]. President Biden has proposed making a historically significant investment of $ 4 billion over four years to help countries identify and address the root causes of migration. “Governance, or lack of good governance, corruption, insecurity and, ultimately, opportunities.” said the US Secretary of State.
The United States has promised to help poor countries fight Covid-19 with vaccines, and Mr. Blinken said the U.S. government would make plans next week to distribute millions of doses.
Many of the immigrants detained at the U.S. border are from three violent and impoverished Central American countries, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador, to whom Washington has promised assistance in exchange for commitments to improve local governance.
US President Joe Biden has been under pressure to reduce the huge increase in undocumented immigration at the US-Mexico border since taking office in January.
