At the roundtable on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of justice reform, US Ambassador Yuri Kim issued strong messages towards the implementation of this reform. While appreciating the work achieved so far, Mrs. Kim said there is still a lot to do.
Among other things, the US Ambassador said that many wanted to block justice reform, but now she is giving her first results. “It’s time to show that justice will prevail over justice.” she concluded her speech.
“5 years ago, Albania approved the constitutional legal changes for the Justice Reform. In the polls, Albanians supported the Justice Reform, which proved that ordinary Albanians wanted a fundamental change in the changes in the Judiciary. Reform has not been easy, but we are now seeing the first results. Albania has made tremendous progress. As we have seen SPAK and BKH are functional and are yielding results.
Powerful vetting has uprooted highly corrupt judges and prosecutors from the justice system. The law applies equally to all. No one, no matter how powerful you think you are, can be above the law. It is the hope of Albania and the Albanian people to ensure that the Justice Reform is done properly and that the cycle of impunity is broken.
Many have said it was not going to happen and many wanted it not to happen, and many continue to prevent it from happening. It is the work of everyone around this roundtable, especially the Albanians, to reconfirm your work as your people want. It is time to open a new era to create a system where the citizen has equal opportunities. This is the beginning, you have made a good start, but more needs to be done. This is a critical moment, the US is with you, and you must overcome the obstacles that remain in your path.
We will be with you until the end. US support has begun with the Obama administration, Trump administration and in the Biden administration this support will be strengthened. The time has come, it is a good time many things have been achieved. It’s a good time to appreciate where we are and what we have done. Improve to be able to hold on behalf of your people. In order for there to be real change, it’s up to you to be part of the justice system, ” said Ambassador Kim.
