Using heat and cold is a natural soothing method for labor pains. Using them is meant to make you feel more comfortable and relaxed.
You may want to use a combination of both of these methods. The heat relieves muscle strain and can be applied using a power pillow, warm towel, hot compress, hot water bottle, or a bag or sock filled with hot rice. To relieve pain, you can also apply it on the shoulders, lower abdomen and back. Alternatively, you can also use a cold can, a cold compress or an ice pack. To relieve pain, some women like to apply a cold compress to the lower back. Also, a cold, damp cloth on your face can help lower your blood pressure and keep you cool during labor.
Shower or bath: in many maternity wards, delivery rooms are equipped with showers. Some are even equipped with simple baths or whirlpools, to ease labor pains. Warm water helps you immensely, blocking the excitement of pain in the brain.
You can do this at home, before leaving for the maternity ward or the clinic where you will be born. If you are going to take a shower, you can sit in a chair and direct your shower head so that the water falls on your back or abdomen.
