The death toll from the coronavirus could be three times higher than officially reported, the World Health Organization has said. The statement was made by WHO Assistant Director General Samira Asma. The WHO estimates that by May 2021 about 3 to 4 million people have died as a result of COVID-19 disease, caused by the new coronavirus.
“In fact, this number could be two or three times higher. “So I think there could be about 6 to 8 million deaths.” WHO data analyst William Msemburi provided details of the calculation.
“This assessment includes unreported deaths as well as deaths due to lack of hospital capacity, isolation measures that have restricted movement and other factors,” he said. The coronavirus was first detected in the Chinese city of Wuhan in late 2019.
The Chinese government has denied allegations that the virus left the laboratory. A team of international experts traveled to Wuhan in January to investigate the origin of the virus. The team has refuted the theory that the virus came out of the lab, but its research is based on samples and evidence provided by Chinese officials.
