In a world that is increasingly focused on protecting the environment, governments around the world have had to take as many initiatives as possible when it comes to combating climate change.
With this in mind, Uswitch analyzed cities around the world, relying on several factors to determine their sustainability in environmental protection:
- Energy consumption
- Transport infrastructure
- SUSTAINABILITY
- Pollution, air quality and CO2 emissions
- Percentage of green space
Based on the above factors, which are the most sustainable cities in the world in terms of environmental protection?
- Copenhagen, Denmark
Denmark prides itself on making the transition to a green economy, so it is no surprise to designate its capital as one of the five most sustainable cities in the world. The proximity of the city to water and the large percentage of green spaces make it one of the happiest places in the world, as well as one of the most sustainable places in environmental protection.
- Dubai, United Arab Emirates
Dubai is also ranked as one of the five most sustainable cities in the world for environmental protection. It even has its own project “Sustainable City”, which is dedicated to achieving this goal and was created to give priority to a green lifestyle.
- Brisbane, Australia
Sustainability strategy for Brisbane environment is rooted in the natural environment that surrounds the city. Its community promises to be “clean, green, sustainable 2017 – 2031” focused on clean air, biodiversity and low carbon emissions.
- Madrid, Spain
The Spanish capital is home to 300,000 trees and 64 square kilometers of green space, making it a benchmark for sustainability in environmental protection.
The lush parks of Madrid are one of the many tourist attractions. One of them is Monte de El Pardo, a protected nature park that is approximately 50 times larger than New York Central Park.
- Canberra, Australia
According to the Uswitch report, Canberra in Australia is the most sustainable city in the world. The Australian capital has an excellent public transport service, providing 48 per cent of its energy in sustainable ways. The city also recorded the lowest level in the pollution index.
Canberra relies heavily on solar and wind energy, which enable 94 percent of its residents to access the Internet.
While the least sustainable cities for environmental protection are:
Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
Jeddah is the least stable city in the global index. Crude oil production has significant effects on air pollution in the city, and the greenhouse gases produced affect global warming.
New Delhi, India
New Delhi is the second least sustainable city. Given that India has the largest population after China and high building density, public green spaces here are considered impossible. /
