Samsung is pushing towards pixel size limits on camera sensors. The latest Isocell JN1 has 50 megapixels in a narrow 1 / 2.76-inch format or 0.64 micrometers per pixel.
It is significantly smaller than the 0.7 micrometer found in the 43.7 megapixel sensor of 2019. With the new sensor, smartphone designers can apply different fields of view and use it as a selfie, ultra-wide, telephoto or standard camera.
Samsung says the new sensor reduces the thickness of the camera module by 10%. The problem with small pixels is that they do not accumulate as much light as large pixels. For low light images the sensor combines four pixels into one reducing the resolution to 12.5-megapixels.
The company says the new sensor has a technology that replaces metal barriers between color filters with materials that reduce light loss by 16%.
The sensor has already entered production and will soon appear on smartphones with 4K 60fps or full HD video at 240fps. / PCWorld Albanian
