Former NATO Commander-in-Chief General Wesley Clark, who led the NATO bombing campaign against Serb forces in 1999, said in Pristina on Wednesday that Kosovo had made impressive progress towards democracy and freedom.
He made these comments at the beginning of his visit to Kosovo at the invitation of the Ministry of Defense where he was received with a state ceremony by the Kosovo Security Force.
“I am honored to be here, I am happy to be returning to Kosovo. This is the first time I have had the opportunity to visit the Ministry of Defense and I am very impressed as I see Kosovo over the years on an impressive journey towards democracy, freedom and hope for increased economic development for the people here. “The people of Kosovo are a powerful example to the rest of the world of what it means for a nation to be determined to live, work and serve for democracy,” said Mr Clark.
The Minister of Defense, Armend Mehaj, assessing the crucial role of General Clark in the liberation of Kosovo, said that from today the study center of the Kosovo Security Force will bear his name.
Today, in honor of the historic general, he will name our school of officers the Wesley Clark Center for University Studies. This is the least we can do for a hero like General Wesley Clark. He is a high and precious personality in the history of Kosovo and will remain so for generations “, said Mr. Mehaj.
The NATO bombing campaign led by Mr. Clark lasted 78 days, but even after the withdrawal of Serbian forces it took many efforts for Kosovo to declare independence in 2008, which is opposed by Serbia and its ally, Russia./VOA
