Hungary will lift most restrictions on the pandemic, including the measure of isolation during the night hours, once the number of vaccinated reaches 5 million this weekend, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said on Friday.
Orban told state radio that residents would no longer need to wear masks outdoors.
“This means we have defeated the third wave of the pandemic,” Orban said, adding that it was time to say “goodbye to the masks” in public places.
Hungary is the only European Union country that has approved and used the Russian and Chinese Sputnik vaccines.
This has enabled this country to achieve one of the highest vaccination levels in the EU. About 50% of the population of about 10 million have already received at least one dose of the vaccine.
