The UK has recorded its highest daily cases of coronavirus since late February suggesting that the Delta variant, which was first discovered in India, is spreading widely across the country.
Government figures on Wednesday showed the UK recorded 7,540 new infections, the largest daily increase since 26 February.
Cases have increased in recent weeks as a result of the Delta variant and the concern is that the increase will put pressure back on the health system.
Another 123 people were hospitalized with coronavirus-related symptoms, bringing the total to 1,024. The number of people who died after being positive for COVID-19 rose by six to 127,860 confirmed deaths.
Health experts hope the rapid use of vaccines will break the link between new cases and deaths. To date, a large proportion of infected people are within the less sensitive age groups, many of whom have not yet received their first dose. EN
