Weather extremes appear in different parts of the globe. While the countries of Central Europe and more recently China have also faced floods, in Dubai we are dealing with another extreme of atmospheric conditions.
High temperatures have made the authorities in this country think of another alternative, thus creating “artificial rain”. According to the National Meteorological Center, the rains brought a large amount of water that flooded the streets.
On Sunday, the UAE national weather service released video footage of heavy rainfall. Rain is stimulated using the technology of drones that emit electric charges into the cloud, so that they accumulate to release precipitation.
The current system used to change the electric charge of clouds is being run by researchers at the University of Reading in England and is estimated at millions of dollars.
Professor Maarten Ambaum, who worked on the project, told the BBC in March that the UAE had enough clouds to create suitable conditions for rain.
The project tries to get the water droplets together and stick together. “When the points come together and are big enough, they will rain like rain.”, Prof Prof Ambaum told the BBC.
